Well done! Mr. Knight's definition of science fiction was, perhaps, a little too stringent. I think he was simply hitting the reject button out of habit. Someone else might have noticed that your story would be far less poignant in any other setting. The science fiction setting is necessary and shouldn't be viewed as simply a backdrop.
I got that he was turning into something cephalopod-ish because of the exposure of his eye to the tentacles, but then the daughter-in-law and the baby showing up made me wonder if there was a greater significance, like now he was contagious too? But I wasn't sure. I really enjoyed reading it tho!! :)

After all, he is the son of Saint Gióng, Vietnamese's God of War, Youth, and Strength.

Bigheart’s life as a lowly farm boy takes a predictable turn for the heroic when an ancient prophecy reveals him to be the chosen one who will overthrow the tyrannical Lord Gravedeath and restore peace to the realm. His father’s last words, “it’s nice to be important, but it’s more important to be nice,” will have absolutely no bearing on the story, but it seemed like a good thing to say in the moment. With a motley crew that includes a wizard with no powers, identical twins who the author usually forgets to write lines for, and a sarcastic and beautiful female character whose sole purpose is to sexually frustrate him, Bigheart must journey to the outer reaches of the realm to reach the Object of Great Power before Lord Gravedeath does - something that seems unlikely given the stunning incompetence of the latter.
